A fer-wosty & fer-woggy morning in the Chalke Valley.

Broad accents of the landlordly kind began coming through the wall at 08.25, five minutes earlier than usual: the Christmas rush has begun for the Village Store. Many birds, no longer flying, will be arriving for despatch to dining tables in this, and surrounding, villages next Monday .

It is rare to have a village shop in the UK. It has become, and is about-to-be-becoming very much rarer, to have a village post office, and very rare indeed to have a village butcher. But for all 3 to be combined in one premises is, well, exceptionally fortunate for turkey eaters in this part of the world.

09.05  On this day in 1987, the purchase of Reddish House was completed.

Three days before, with the generous permission of Ursula, the Dowager Marchioness of Chichester, Toyah & I began to move in. The move from Fernhill House in Witchampton, some 18 miles away, was major. The transportation of stuff took 7 days, following several days of packing. This move was itself dwarfed by the logistics of the move from Reddish 11.5 years later, which took six months in all for organising, packing & transportation.

More landlordly accents through the wall.

12.49  A busy morning in the office & a discussion with David addressing the future. My main contribution, and reflections since the recent trip to Seattle condensed to this: you have to see it coming. If we can see it coming, we can prepare. If we’re not quite sure what it might be, we can clear the space & be engaged, watching, listening.

Shortly, off to Bredonborough.

19.53  Bredonborough.

Home. Hooray!

The bookshelves in the Cellar, formerly painted in two shades of red but with the colours reversed (this Dairy for 6th. December) have returned, re-painted & as designed and ordered. This is an example of a good firm standing by their work. They made a mistake and, without ongoing detailed correspondence & conditional forms of reparation, took the shelves quietly away & quietly returned them.

The quality of an undertaking is determined by the quality of the person undertaking it.
